Alright. Since this is a forum about Final Fantasy challenges, there is no better place to ask this question I guess. What good challenges can you come up with for Final Fantasy II? It's leveling system is weird so most things I thought would limit myself enough to actually make me think about what I want to do in each battle turned out to be the exact opposite.
For example:
I started a SCNENHI (Solo Character, No Equipment, No Healing Items) challenge in the past. Solo Character is always quite hard, but it's the opposite in FF II as having only one character makes him take a beating quite often which then makes him or her level up in HP and CON nearly every battle in the early game. Having no equipment makes this even worse as you have no armor to rely on which was something I actually aimed for, but it turned out to make characters overlevel in defensive stats even more. But this wasn't too much of a problem. The real problem was having no weapon.
Unhanded combat starts off really weak. Perfect for a challenge, right? Wrong. Once you get it to level 4 or 5, your damage starts to be insane. No other weapon type reaches 4-digit damage values THIS fast. When I reached the Adamantoise in this challenge run, I one-shotted it. With approx. 1500 damage, which is about twice the amount of HP this thing has. And to make matters worse, Adamantoise (like always) has an extremly high defense stat for this point of the game.
No Healing Items didn't actually matter at all. I learned Cure to have at least some form of (very limited and very weak) restorative power, but it wasn't needed. Fist combat snowballs so extremly hard, that you won't have to heal unless you face a monster party of at least 6 enemies. And even then you will most likely only take single- or low double-digit amounts of damage per battle.
Fact is, Final Fantasy II is weird because of its level system and coming up with good challenges is harder than expected since most of them turn out to be as easy (if not even easier) than normal runs. It's still one of my favorite games to play and I really want to play a good challenge, that makes the game... challenging. Sounds weird, I know.
Any ideas? xD
